“By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.”

My Story
Growing up in a practicing good Catholic family I attended Mass weekly and confession yearly, however my faith never exceeded the bare minimum. Going through high school I lacked any kind of prayer life and begrudgingly went to mass and other church events my parents required of me. When I was most of the way through my junior year of college the pandemic shut everything down and I suddenly found myself removed from my routine and with a lot of free time. On a whim I started listening to Catholic Podcasts and doing spiritually reading. Through this God started to work on my heart and I started to understand and believe the teachings of the Church, however throughout the rest of high school I still had no relationship with Jesus.
Coming into college at Virginia Tech I wanted to keep increasing my knowledge of the faith while still having the “traditional” college experience. The first semester I joined a bible study and attended Mass on Sundays, while still trying to enjoy the common weekend activities of college students. However, I found that those activities left me feeling empty and those friendships shallow, while at the same time I was growing deep virtuous friendships with the guys in my bible study and within the Catholic Campus Ministry at Virginia Tech. Furthermore, I looked up too many of these men, who also had deep spiritual lives. Seeing their example, I began to desire the relationship with Christ that they had.
Come this second semester of my freshman year this conversion process was sped up through the passing of my mother. This was the first death of someone who was close to me which finally got me to ponder something much greater than myself. Additionally, the Lord used this tragedy to draw me to Himself as for the first time in my life I started praying daily and consistently. He granted me great consolation that helped through this trying time.
Throughout the rest of college my spiritual life only continued to blossom. My prayer life grew deeper, I frequented the sacraments more often and I could see the fruits it was bearing in my life. I began to be asked to take on more leadership in the Catholic Campus Ministry such as leading bible studying or being in student leadership. These experiences forced me to further grow in faith, virtue and maturity. As I grew in these virtues my friendships within the ministry continued to deepen as well. I am very grateful for both the good and tragic experiences in my life as the Lord has used them to draw me continually closer to himself.
